Weather Update: IMD Issues Yellow Alert! East Rajasthan to Experience Season's First Cold Wave from November 25-27

By: F2DF November 26, 2022

IMD's regional meteorological centre in New Delhi has issued a yellow watch for East Rajasthan for the next three days. The advisory advises residents to 'be aware' of the local weather situation and to take appropriate precautions.

Temperatures in most Indian states have been steadily dropping in recent weeks as winter has gradually set in. The country's north-western region has been particularly affected by the winter chill, and parts of Rajasthan appear set to shiver even more due to icy conditions.

A cold wave is expected to grip isolated pockets across the eastern half of Rajasthan over the next three days, from Friday to Sunday, November 25-27, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). This forecast is one of the department's first cold wave warnings for the 2022 winter season.

The IMD declares a cold wave in the plains when minimum temperatures are expected to fall 4.5°C to 6.4°C below the region's average temperatures. However, a cold wave can be declared directly if the actual temperature is expected to fall below 4°C, regardless of how far it deviates from the average.

Meanwhile, the minimum temperatures in many parts of East Rajasthan were 1.6°C to 3°C below average during the early hours of Friday. Similar deviations were observed in isolated locations in West Rajasthan. Churu in West Rajasthan had the lowest minimum temperature across the plains of India, at 5°C.

Such cold waves can be dangerous, even lethal - according to an IMD report released last year, human deaths caused by cold waves in 2020 will be 76 times greater than those caused by heat waves.

According to the Ministry of Statistics, 152 people died due to India's 99 days of cold weather in 2020. The number of cold wave days increased nearly 2.7 times between 2017 and 2020, according to the report.

Delhi Weather Update:

The Indian Meteorological Department reported that Delhi had its coldest morning in November since 2020, with temperatures as low as 7.8°C. The minimum temperature fell four degrees below the average November temperature. Meanwhile, the IMD predicted a partly cloudy sky throughout the day, with maximum temperatures reaching 27°C. The minimum temperature on Friday was 6.2 degrees Celsius, the lowest for the month since November 23, 2020.

More on this:

  • Will it rain in Delhi today?

IMD forecasted a partly cloudy sky throughout the day, with highs of 27°C. On Friday, the low temperature was 6.2 degrees Celsius, the lowest for the month since November 23, 2020.

  • Why are there cold waves in Rajasthan?

When minimum temperatures in the plains are expected to fall 4.5°C to 6.4°C below the region's average, the IMD declares a cold wave in Rajasthan. On the other hand, a cold wave can be declared directly if the actual temperature is expected to drop below 4°C, regardless of how far it deviates from the average.
